As a result of St. John’s Strategic Facilities Master Plan completed by Array in June 2010, it was determined that key Medical Center services were in need of expansion and modernization to support the quantitative demand and vision for the future. Array worked with St. John Medical Center and a team of consultants to develop two new additions bracketing an existing emergency department and renovating of existing spaces to provide a new entrance, lobby, and services and amenities for patients and families as well as site development to offer convenient parking and improved site circulation. The south addition includes a drop-off canopy, entrance, lobby, patient registration, pre-admission testing, key diagnostic and treatment services, waiting spaces, and a coffee shop. The west addition includes two new operating suites, a post anesthesia care unit, endoscopy procedure rooms, a pediatric inpatient unit and a clinical decision unit for the emergency department. The renovated area converts a shelled second floor space to an out-patient surgery preparation and recovery unit.
In a suburban setting, the existing hospital site has a significant number of trees, landscaping, open spaces, outdoor seating and dining and a walking path. Over time, the hospital grew, but the arrangement of pedestrian and vehicular circulation as well as parking had not addressed the new configuration of facilities leading to confusing access and congestion. The new site layout preserved the better qualities of the existing site amenities while simplifying pedestrian and vehicular circulation, providing more convenient parking and lending intuitive architectural clues for wayfinding and access.
This project is nearly completed with the LEED certification process, has been awarded 53 points and is expected to obtain LEED Silver status. Key sustainable design elements to protect environmental resources include supporting alternative transportation, low-emitting and fuel-efficient vehicles, maximizing open space on the site, protecting existing trees and open spaces, utilizing water-efficient landscaping, reducing water usage, optimizing energy performance, enhancing the Owner’s recycling program, reusing existing building walls, floors and roof, installing low and no VOC materials and recycling almost all demolition and new construction waste.
