Project Description

The Wharf is a new mixed-use waterfront neighborhood being developed by Hoffman-Madison Waterfront as part of the District of Columbia’s Anacostia Waterfront Initiative. The site is located on the historic Washington Channel, situated along DC’s southwest waterfront and adjacent to the National Mall. The waterfront redevelopment stretches across 27 acres of land and 24 acres of water, from the Municipal Fish Market to Fort McNair.

When complete, The Wharf will comprise approximately 3.2 million square feet of new residential, office, retail, hotel, cultural, and public uses including parks, cultural centers, promenades, waterfront piers, and docks. It will be a vibrant, mixed-use community comprising of a series of “places,” varying in scale, program, and design. Together they create a waterfront destination for both local residents and visitors alike.

The architectural character relies on a diversity of scales and materials, utilizing stepped back facades, a variety of complementary materials, and careful attention to the pedestrian scale. The Wharf responds differently to the street and waterfront elevations, offering significant views to the water while responding to the existing architectural scale and character of the District. The project will be among the first in the District of Columbia to be LEED® ND-Gold and will include a very innovative stormwater management system and electrical cogeneration plant, while all buildings will strive for LEED Silver certification.
