Project Description

The owners of this cabin have a deep regard for nature and enjoy fishing and hiking.

The cabin orients to the river and is situated to preserve all of the magnificent existing trees. It is organized around a screened porch with a translucent roof that fills the cabin with natural light and provides plentiful cross ventilation so air conditioning is rarely needed.

The living room and master bedroom are the primary spaces and have steep pitched roofs with loft spaces tucked into them which are accessed by an alternating tread stair and a ladder. The roofs of these spaces project towards the river and form porches supported on mountain stone piers. The living room porch has a broad stair that descends to the river.

Natural materials are used throughout the cabin with recycled heart pine floors and red oak heavy timbers harvested ten miles from the site. Mountain stone forms the foundations, piers and the fireplace. The roofs are clad in standing seam metal.

Our design objective was to make a serene shelter for the family to dwell in a splendid natural environment.
