Project Description

The South Tower at Sinai Hospital is a new six-story, in-patient facility with 101 beds comprising four inpatient units, shell space for future expansion, a mechanical penthouse and a helipad built above the existing emergency department. It was the first step in a complex, multiphase effort to expand and improve the services of Sinai Hospital to the community. It features all private-inpatient rooms (floors 3, 4 & 6) designed around a decentralized nursing concept, with nursing alcoves outside each patient room for faster and more efficient responses.

A strategic plan to accommodate growth within the surgery department required Sinai Hospital and HCM to develop a plan to improve inpatient care while managing overall flow of patient and public traffic through the hospital.

Driven by a domino effect of renovations to reorganize the Surgery Department and thereby the continuum of care related to surgical procedures (ie. PACU, central sterile, ICU, IMC, etc.) each floor was planned with a unique function and purpose:
– Cardiology Intervention unit contains three existing cath labs, relocated from the general hospital, and two new cath labs, along with enclosed recovery bays, offices, staff lounge and a waiting area.
– Neouroscience combines the hospital’s recognized neurological services in a 36-bed all-private-room unit.
– ICU includes 29 patient rooms, doctor’s conference room, staff conference room, four on-call sleep rooms, offices, and support areas.
– Intermediate Care (IMC) was relocated from the general hospital to make room for the expansion of the Surgery Department and to improve patient/public flow and accommodates 36 beds in private rooms.

The new building boasts the area’s first hospital roof garden, which can be viewed from the 5th and 6th floors.
