Project Description

A PLACE ON THE MEADOW This house and adjacent pool house represent quintessential Sonoma living — modern, yet pastoral; simple, yet luxurious; formal in plan, yet exuberant in spirit. They literally exist in a meadow, capturing its essence. The house reflects the owners’ personal style, where color, pattern, and texture enhance their connection to the landscape in which they live and play. CLIENT OBJECTIVES • Create a home with a relationship between the interiors and the landscape, a family- centered environment with formal and informal public spaces and a private bedroom wing. • Create a living space for entertainment and family activities, directly linked to the pool. • Connect the living space and the surrounding landscape through a visual relationship, so the barriers between them recede into the background. DESIGN PROGRAM The design scope included architecture, interior design and decoration, art consultation, extensive custom fabrication, and accessories. The design is an example of responsible stewardship, using sustainable ideas and materials to create environmentally sensitive solutions. The house is organized into five primary areas: • An entry that welcomes visitors as they approach the house itself. • A library and dining room that provide areas for quiet conversation and socializing. • A private side of the house with a master bedroom suite for quiet relaxation, as well as two bedroom suites for the children with direct connections to the outdoors. • A comfortable space for young and old alike to gather to share meals and entertainment. • Terraces are extensions of the interior space that engage the outdoors. Creating a sense of separation between the private and public sides of the residence was a design challenge. The custom concrete screen in the family room achieves this by affording some visual separation without being solid. The imagery is an Akan symbol of spiritual cleanliness and good fortune.
