Project Description

Hord Coplan Macht provided urban design, architecture and landscape architecture services for the renovation of this prominent urban plaza located in the heart of Baltimore’s Central Business District. It is now one of the venues for the City’s First Thursday concert series.

The plaza was one of the first urban renewal projects in Baltimore’s business district, but was suffering from aging infrastructure and a poor image.

To reinvigorate this public space and allow it to host concerts and festivals, HCM’s design included the removal of portions of an outdated and unused overhead walkway system. A new major stair from the overhead walkway provides a space for performances and ceremonies.

The plaza includes two performance areas for concerts and other live entertainment. The performance spaces provided power, lighting and other infrastructure to facilitate stage and equipment. In addition, built-in seating is provided around the plaza with audiences in mind.

The revitalized plaza was designed to accommodate very large crowds and the street vendors to serve them.

The entire project was recognized by the local chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architecture.
