Project Description

Our clients wanted their home remodel to reflect a closeness to the elements of the ocean depths, fire and the sky. They are avid scuba divers and love being outside. To them, their home on a bluff seemed to be tucked right up into the prevailing weather conditions. The home, built in 1954, overlooks Lake Washington and was to be a complete teardown and renovation. We saved foundations, the basement slab, main floor joists and yes, the kitchen cabinets. From a practical perspective, the design parameters included energy and water efficient features, maximization of both available light and the terrific view. All systems were to be updated. The three-story remodel was built out at 3,450sf. Many premium finishes had been chosen, but it was cooperation between our project manager, architect and homeowner that allowed crucial compromises to be made at no loss to design sophistication. The home brims with modern luxury. The other challenge we faced was water intrusion. This was overcome with very strict cooperation with subs and vetting details with all involved. The prominent features include: Italian plaster at the exterior entry, expansive foyer with ridge sky lights, slate entry flooring with bordered diamond pattern, floor to ceiling tile along the fireplace wall, white oak flooring, quarter sawn throughout, including stairs, slumped glass stair wall panels, master bedroom suite including a private deck and fireplace. Located just outside the master suite, the sculptural rustic metal fireplace is a romantic place to enjoy a glass of wine. It’s quite dramatic when fired up on a windy day. Step off the master suite deck and into the bedroom, which adjoins the master bath. In the bath suite, there were no compromises made in fixture choices or finishes. The dual vanities (one not shown), tub deck and shower wall cap are topped with 3cm glass slab. The unique globe chandelier with its single crystal orb scatters the light that beams through corner windows. The three sided glass shower, has dual rain showers and a hand-held. On the floor are wood grained rectangular tile. Not shown in limited images are the fully automated remote controlled toilets, master suite with huge walk-in closet, upstairs laundry room, an added overhead bank of kitchen cabinetry stained in ebony to overcome the need to match the reinstalled cabinetry and an automated lighting system in the powder room that magically illuminates the space and bathes the guest in an ocean-like immersion of blue light. Downstairs rooms include, a mirror lined work-out room, media/office space, guest bath, and an additional laundry room. One of the two downstairs bathrooms is configured with an open shower for rinsing scuba gear. In this home, there are no frivolous embellishments, it’s full of gorgeous glass, wood and metal finishes. Every feature of the renovation reflects a strong modern presence that symbolizes our clients’ taste for elemental elegance.
