Project Description

Builder's Choice and Custom Home Awards Finalist

Built on a commanding site on Long Island Sound in Greenwich, CT, this French Normandy Manor House takes its design inspiration from the original house on site. Composed of five bays, the center features a limestone entry portico with iconic columns supporting a limestone roof. The water side of the house evokes the rambling effect of a grand estate developed over time. Developed in a linear manner to capture the best water views and sunlight, the plan consists of a single row of primary rooms. While providing inviting spaces, this arrangement allowed for a great amount of exterior exposure with large glazed areas, but also created an energy draw. Without compromising the traditional appearance of the home, we resolved to employ energy saving technologies.

Spray foam insulation was used for all exterior and subterranean walls and roofs, geothermal wells were drilled for the heating and cooling system. LED lighting was utilized and an onsite power generation system was installed. Heat produced by this process is recaptured to warm the domestic water, heat the pool, and add to the home heating process. At night when the home uses little power, the electric meter runs backward as power is sold back to the grid. Together, the home is comfortable yet inexpensive to heat and cool.
