Project Description

Fire Works
Arlington, Virginia
Commercial Interiors
Fire was used as the primary design element; visible from the entire restaurant and the outdoor
dining patio. A small Loudoun County pizzeria was replicated in the heart of Arlington's urban
Courthouse district, on the ground floor of a new high rise hotel, without losing the recognizable
brand of the original restaurant.
The design of Fire Works was intended to capture the elemental simplicity of the restaurant's
signature specialties, wood-fired pizza and craft beer. The material palette, reflecting the original
location, incorporates an urban loft-like aesthetic, more in keeping with the hip, young crowd
populating Courthouse.
Fire becomes a visual anchor and focal point for the entire dining room & bar. An interior 60"
gas fireplace, the five ton wood-fired pizza oven, and an oversized exterior 96" long linear fire pit
each play a key role in the experience of the diner, as well as Clarendon Boulevard's many
pedestrians and passing cars. Each fireplace is clad in metallic “corten” steel porcelain tile, which
also runs along the floor of the bar area connecting the two interior fire elements.
Oak, as a material, is used throughout. Storage bins make up one entire wall housing fuel for the
oven. The entire sweeping bar, built-in banquettes and oiled, wide plank oak flooring is made of
the same oak. Galvanized metal is used to reinforce the industrial nature of beer brewing. The
windowed keg cooler, displaying the vast beer selection, sits prominently near the maitre’d.
Emanating from the two story cooler, galvanized, exposed flange piping carries the beer lines
above the bar patrons, turning down over the back bar in eighteen specialty beer taps.
Galvanized touches extend to the industrial light fixtures, door pulls, menu chalkboard supports,
and bar rails. Cream colored walls are punctuated by orange and yellow upholstery, while deep
orange acoustic clouds add to the ambiance.
