Project Description

This project is located in the heart of the Lakewood Addition of Dallas, Texas. The owners chose this corner site based on its location and how the house would be sited to perch over the prominent, yet quaint, intersection. The site originally had a small, mid-century ranch style home, and the owners wanted to maintain some of the flavor of the original house. The primary design intent was to create a modern home utilizing warm materials, while also keeping in context with some of the more traditional lines that the neighborhood holds. The primary exterior materials consist of brick, stucco, ipe, and stained soffits and porch ceilings. The interior utilizes natural quarter sawn oak floors, slick wall finish, natural stone, glass tile, and a combination of walnut and painted cabinets. This home is located in a very active front-yard community, and much of the focus for the homeowner was to create a house that interacted with the neighborhood. The main living area is flanked on both sides with full height glass walls, incorporating sliding glass door panels, connecting the living area to both the front porch and the back yard patio. A 3-sided fireplace is centered in the house and can be enjoyed from the living, dining, and kitchen areas. The expansive glazed walls are well protected with generous porches, deep soffits, and detailed awnings. The Master Bedroom was positioned upstairs to embrace the expansive view of the heavily treed neighborhood and to allow access to the children’s quarters. Part of the design challenge was incorporating art walls with the massive amounts of glass. The house lives very open and airy, yet the collection of spaces are well defined with interesting lines wherever your eye is focused.
