Project Description

Part of a larger renovation to a traditional 1940s two-story, the existing Doffin Residence Bathroom was a mere 28 SF, tucked beneath the central stair of the home. The client, desperate to improve the aesthetics and functionality of this extremely small bathroom, came to us with a desire to maximize the height and natural lighting of this space. By expanding the footprint a mere 2’ to the north during the greater renovation, we were able to incorporate an 8’ tall window on the east wall that now floods the space with natural light. A 1' tall horizontal window above the custom cabinetry brings additional ambient light into the space from the glazed hallway beyond, where reclaimed wood from the project is re-imagined as a playfully textured wall. Simple porcelain tiles used in the corridor flow seamlessly into the bathroom through the portal and up the east wall, visually connecting it with the rest of the home. Inside the bathroom, clean lines and a minimal material palette give the space an uncomplicated, yet luxurious, feel. Installed several inches above the floor plane, custom white oak cabinetry seems to float freely on the north wall, mimicking the language of the window and mirror placement above. High efficiency fixtures and low-VOC paint specified in the design ensure that the bathroom is as healthy and economical as possible, bringing a level of dignity and refinement to this previously overlooked space and thus maximizing its appeal.
