David Hacin, AIA, knows everyone. The 44-year-old architect can't walk through Boston's South End, where he lives and works, without a stream of greetings from shopkeepers, neighbors, and fellow dog owners. Even in the city's other neighborhoods, he regularly runs into friends and acquaintances, often from the close-knit local design community. “I grew up in a small town,” he says, by way of explanation. “There's something [I like] about knowing the lay of the land.”

Tue, 1 Mar 2011 04:18:37 EST

Jeremiah Eck started his residential practice in Boston with $30 in his pocket and little more than a pencil to draw with. Twenty-eight years later, the firm is thriving and Eck, FAIA, has taken up a paintbrush, retreating to his backyard studio each Friday to work on his landscape canvases.

Thu, 10 Mar 2011 04:08:15 EST

How many people dream of living at the beach? What if you could really do it and practice at the top of your profession? Welcome to Mark Hutker's life. Since 1985, the Hoosier native has made Martha's Vineyard, Mass., his home and base of operations for his residential architecture practice.

Mon, 2 Apr 2012 03:19:13 EST
