An exhibition of the six winners of the AIA New York Chapter's "New Practices New York 2008" competition will open on Friday, Sept. 5, with a party from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place, New York City.
The "New Practices New York 2008" exhibition showcases the six New York City-based firms deemed most promising and innovative by the chapter's New Practices Committee: Highest Honor winner Urban A&O, Baumann Architecture, Common Room, David Wallance Architect, Matter Practice, and Openshop|Studio. In addition, the winning firms will present their work and discuss how they organize their architectural practices in a symposium on Oct. 15, 2008, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
For this year's exhibit, each winning firm created a large-scale installation for the Center's double-height storefront to make a statement about how their innovative practices translate to innovative work. Each firm has created a short video and a booklet describing their practices. The exhibit also incorporates firm portraits by photographers Mastromatteo + Steen. "New Practices New York 2008" will run from Sept. 5 through Jan. 3, 2009. For more information, visit www.aiany.org.
