According to the 2010 National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) Survey of Registered Architects, the number of registered architects around the country has increased substantially since 2009. Currently, there are 105,312 registered architects practicing in the United States, with 116,340 reciprocal (out-of-state) architects bringing total registrations to 221,652. The data indicates that on average, an architect is registered in at least two different jurisdictions.
Over the past five years, the total of registered architects has fluctuated. Numbers peaked in 2007 with 112,650 individual registered architects (222,196 total registrations) —a 4.5 percent increase over the previous survey, conducted in 2005. Prior to 2005, the numbers of registered architects in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories were reported to be steadily increasing past 100,000, although NCARB could not provide precise data.
In 2008, individual registrations fell to 104,126 and total registrations declined to 220,347 nationally. Individual registrations dipped again in 2009 to 101,673, with total registrations slipping to 219,970.
Since NCARB began reporting on architect registrations in 1999, California consistently has maintained the highest number of individual resident architects, as well as the highest number of total registrations.
