The J.M. Roberts Residence by modernist architect Richard Joseph Neutra has been listed for sale in West Covina, Calif., at $1.79 million. The restored single-story property with four bedrooms and three bathrooms sits on a 3.45-acre lot and includes some original details including cork tile, terrazzo flooring, built-in planters, and a double-sided stone fireplace.
The first owners of the 2,580-square-foot home initially requested a conventional ranch style house, but Neutra had a more modern aesthetic in mind. Featuring a modular grid, asymmetrical layout, and large windows, the home was the first of its kind when it was built in 1955 and started an era of "California style" residential structures in the area.
Although the home is only 22 miles outside of downtown Los Angeles, it is surrounded by eucalyptus trees and boasts views of the San Gabriel Mountains. The property features outdoor patio spaces and a private pool.
A two-year long restoration was recently completed by local craftsman Eric Lamers in which the single-family home’s original details were rehabilitated and the heating and cooling systems updated. The property is co-listed by California-based Crosby Doe Associates and Nate Cole of Unique California Property.
