Home offices have become the most popular "special-function" room, according to the latest Design Trends Survey released by The American Institute of Architects (AIA). The second quarter 2009 survey focused on home features, systems, and products that are increasing in popularity among residential clients.

The survey revealed, among other things, that households are scaling back on home amenities, but that owners are still utilizing their homes for many different functions. Forty percent of respondents indicated that their clients requested home offices, compared to just over 16 percent who reported interest in media/home theater rooms. The survey showed that mud rooms are as popular as ever, and that energy efficiency, renewable energy technologies, wireless telecommunications, data transmission systems, and energy management systems also are becoming more popular.

AIArchitect recently published the complete findings of the survey.
