RA published a lot of beautiful houses in 2012, and it’s hard to pick favorites. But when I assigned myself to choose my own personal top 5, a few emerged. I love the ingenuity of the Spring Street Loft in New York City by Elmslie Osler from our November/December issue, as well as the classic charm (and smashing fireplace) of the coastal Maine Pond House by Elliott & Elliott Architecture in our September/October issue.

Also among my top 5—these are in no particular order—is the Bal House (left) in Menlo Park, Calif., by Terry & Terry Architecture, a really creative renovation of a mid-century ranch house. It won a Residential Architect Design Award in 2012.

A couple of additonal design award winners stand out for me. I love the way Julie Snow’s B+W House in Minneapolis carves out a landscaped garden on its tight city lot. And Lake/Flato’s modular Porch House demonstrates an evolved, not to mention easy-on-the-eyes, approach to prefab.
