AIA Connecticut has announced 19 winners in its 2008 Design Awards program, which each year recognizes design excellence in projects in Connecticut or by Connecticut architects. Honor awards were given in five categories: Residential Design, Built Design, Unbuilt, Preservation, and Architecture: Encompassing Art.

The three winning projects in the Residential category are:

Addition to a Mid-Century Modern House, New Canaan, Conn., by Mark Markiewicz, AIA, New Canaan. The competition jury appreciated the way the addition fulfilled the site plan, how it balances the original composition and first expansion, and the way the project evolved over time.

Mountain Road Residence, Kent, Conn., by Halper Owens Architects, Washington Depot, Conn. The architects' decision to save the shell of the existing barn by moving the structure impressed the jury, as did the modern use of traditional materials, and the resulting blend of old and new, modern and traditional.

Central Park West Apartment, New York City, by Joeb + Partners, Architects, Greenwich, Conn. The jury loved how the architects created beautifully modulated volumes within the combined space of four existing apartments.
