Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin and Taliesin West make this year's endangered buildings list. The 2010 World Monuments Watch, announced Oct. 6, 2009, by the World Monuments Fund (WMF), comprises 93 cultural heritage sites across 47 countries, including nine within the continental United States and 15 that were built during the 20th century. Through the Watch, which is issued every two years, WMF advocates for the protection and preservation of monuments to human culture around the globe that are threatened by war, natural disasters, human encroachment, vandalism, or neglect. Of 630-plus sites included on Watch lists through 2008, nearly half have received WMF funding and support.
In the 21st century, sustainable stewardship has become critical and organizations like WMF should collaborate with local partners in their efforts to preserve heritage sites, according to Bonnie Burnham, WMF president. "The sites on the 2010 Watch list make a dramatic case for the need to bring together a variety of sectors—economic, environmental, heritage preservation, and social—when we are making plans that will affect us all. Greater cooperation among these sectors would benefit humanity today, while ensuring our place as stewards of the Earth for the next generation," she said during a press conference announcing the 2010 Watch.
The sites included on the 2010 Watch highlight the need to balance heritage concerns with the social, economic, and environmental interests of the communities in which they exist. Many are not in imminent danger, but will face challenges in the future that will threaten their existence, noted Erica Avrami, WMF's research and education director. Listing such sites now can launch dialogues that may help divert potential threats.

Phillis Wheatley Elementary School, New Orleans
St. Louis Cemetery No. 2, New Orleans
