Dwell and Google SketchUp have teamed to launch a residential design competition for aspiring architects and designers that explores this question: "What does it mean to feel at home in the modern world?" The "Design Your Dwelling" competition is accepting entries through Aug. 31, 2008.

Entries must be designed to fit a predetermined home site and must address climate, public access, and size constraints. Dwell's judges will evaluate submissions based on their sustainability, carbon footprint reduction, cost efficiency, and interior and exterior design, among other factors. To participate, visit the competition Web site and follow the download and entry instructions. Submissions must be designed using Google SketchUp and uploaded to the Google 3D Warehouse as indicated in entry guidelines.

The competition winner will be flown to San Francisco for lunch at the Dwell offices, a tour of the competition home site overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Dwell/AIA architecture home tours. Organizers will also build a physical 3-D model of the winner's design, display it at Dwell's headquarters from Sept. 30 through Oct. 31, 2008, and then give it to the winner.
