build local challenge winners--season 2
|
A few years ago, a Portland, Ore., builder (Stephen Aigiuer of Green Hammer) and a local forester (Peter Hayes of Hyla Woods) put their heads together and created the Build Local Alliance (BLA). Inspired by the nationally popular farm-to-table movement that connects local farmers and chefs, the organization aims to unite Portland's wood users and wood producers. Its mission, as stated on its website, is "to improve the vitality of local forests and related human communities by connecting local, responsibly grown and processed wood with local projects."
The BLA holds an annual contest recognizing companies, organizations, and individuals who use local and sustainable wood in their work. This year's winners include The Joinery, a Portland furniture maker, and Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects, for their inviting downtown Portland office space. Check out all five winners and learn more about the BLA here. Is there a need or an opportunity for a similar program in your area?--m.d.
