Pugh + Scarpa's award

I was very happy to hear that Pugh + Scarpa Architects won the AIA's Firm Award for 2010. This hard-working firm does beautiful, sensitive work and well deserves to win this prestigious prize. I visited Pugh + Scarpa in Santa Monica, Calif., back in 2006, for a story I was writing on the firm, and found them an affable and impressive bunch. They also were generous in their comments about other architects' work, which I much appreciated.

On that same trip I spent time at CA Boom, a design show and conference focused mostly on West Coast design and products. Well worth the extra time and effort to attend--the house tours in particular were a major highlight. And before meeting with Pugh + Scarpa I had coffee with David Montalba, AIA, another terrific Santa Monica-based architect who is doing a lot of interesting work.
