Stay in a Schindler House!

If you could decide between staying in a generic hotel or an architecturally important house, I'm guessing that if you're reading this blog you'd choose the latter. I know I would. Luckily for us, a year-old company called Boutique Homes is betting the same. Started by former film set designers Heinz Legler and Veronique Lievre, Boutique Homes connects design-conscious travelers with cool, interesting places to stay. "With rentals, you have to look through thousands of listings," Lievre says. "We thought it would be good to have a smaller collection of places with style."

She and Legler created their own beautiful, widely published boutique hotel in Yelapa, Mexico a few years back. Noticing that their clientele always seemed to be looking for well-designed travel destinations, they came up with the idea for Boutique Homes. The company's website has a section for hotels, and then one for homes available for short-term rentals. Lievre and Legler have managed to list some pretty amazing-looking properties on their site, including R.M. Schindler's Fitzpatrick-Leland House in Los Angeles, available for $380 per night (including parking and a swimming pool).

Boutique Homes is searchable by architect, style, location type, and continent. Check out the Corbu apartment in Marseille, below, which according to Lievre is particularly popular. Homes by currently practicing architects, such as Brian MacKay-Lyons, House + House, and Sant Architects, are also represented. Lievre says she and Legler, based in L.A., are always looking for more architects and designers to join their stable.--M.D.
