AIA New Orleans design awardsWinning the Super Bowl isn't the only reason New Orleanians have to celebrate. Crediting the builderThis morning I was very happy to read a press release about a 1950's modern house in North Carolina that had recently been saved from a potential wrecking ball. I was glad to hear about the house, of course, but even more pleased about the fact that the home's original builder, Frank Walser, was mentioned in the release. ... This Cold HouseMy family and I live in a 170-year-old house with a 60-year-old oil-fired boiler. And while the temperature outside is in the teens right now, that boiler isn't running. Every couple of hours I feed the wood stove, which keeps the first floor comfortable. Upstairs, it's cold, but no one goes upstairs until bedtime. When it's time for the kids to get ready for bed, we might dial the upstairs thermostat to 65 degrees. Before we hit the sack, we set it back to 62 again for the rest of the night. We operate this way to save money on oil and to reduce the amount of non-renewable fuel we burn, but it's really no hardship at all. In fact, in thermal terms, we live a pretty plush life.... Campus housing buzzThe 2010 residential architect design awards judges had a thought-provoking conversation about campus housing during last week's judging. One pointed out student housing's importance as "an opportunity for passive learning." All six judges agreed that small, ground-level community spaces are a positive trend, as opposed to the big public spaces of dormitories past. They debated whether it was better to place these smaller-scale gathering places near the entry to the building, or by the laundry room or other service area. And they'd heard different reports about Steven Holl's Simmons Hall dormitory at MIT--some had heard the building is popular among students, while others had been told the opposite. ...
