The AIA named the 2013 Honor Awards, selecting 28 projects from more than 700 submissions. Nine of the winning awards were granted to interiors projects. The 2013 Honors Awards for Interior Architecture are as follows:
Blessed Sacrament Chapel and Abbey Church Pavilion, by VJAA (Collegeville, Minn.): VJAA converted Marcel Breuer's original 1961 St. John's Abbey Church Project, adding a new Blessed Sacrament Chapel and a two-level lobby addition. The chapel ceiling features platinum leaf to complement Breuer's use of precious metals in the original Abbey Church.
BNIM Iowa, by BNIM (Des Moines, Iowa): The firm took a former Des Moines bank lobby and converted it into a collaborative work environment by building around a central wall lined with cork panels for sharing presentations and other materials.
Charles Smith Wines Tasting Room and World Headquarters, by Olson Kundig Architects (Walla Walla, Wash.): Olson Kundig took a 1917 Johnson Auto Electric building and outfitted it with a tasting room, offices, and retail store, including flexible spaces, such as a large unit that the firm calls the "armadillo."
Chicago Apartment, by VJAA (Chicago): Warmed by wood surfaces, the lit and open areas of the new 5,500-square-foot apartment are organized by material divisions. Digitally designed reflective aluminum screens provide contrast to the Asian art and sculpture throughout the apartment and also move daylight throughout the center.
Doc Magic, by RA-DA (Torrance, Calif.): RA-DA used both open work areas and tailored passageways to build an office space that reflects the client's mission as a tech company dealing with highly sensitive shared data.
Lamar Advertising Corporate Headquarters, by Eskew+Dumez+Ripple (Baton Rouge, La.): The firm turned an unremarkable 1970s data center into a new corporate headquarters featuring an interior, outdoor "garden room" to compensate for the windowless floor plate.
McAllen Main Library, by Meyer, Scherer & Rockcastle (MS&R) (McAllen, Texas): The city decided to convert an abandoned big box Walmart store into a new central library. Featuring 125,000 square feet on one level, the building features spaces distinguished by materials, forms, and colors.
PACCAR Hall at the University of Washington's Foster School of Business, by LMN Architects (Seattle): The new four-story central atrium for the business school emphasizes social connections and spaces that are interconnected by both their visual and functional relationships.
The Todd Bolender Center for Dance and Creativity, by BNIM (Kansas City, Mo.): BNIM relocated the Kansas City Ballet into the 52,000-square-foot former Power House coal-burning plant at Kansas City's Union Station. The building, which was completed in 1914 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2004, sat abandoned from the 1970s until 2006.
