The Linden Hills Cottage's carefully planned proportions help give it the feeling of an older house, to better fit into its Minneapolis neighborhood.

"The scale of the pieces and parts is so important," says architect Jean Rehkamp Larson. Case in point: the home's well-detailed entry foyer.

The home's main level floor plan.

This 4,200-square-foot house looks smaller from the street than it actually is. Rehkamp Larson Architects configured the front-facing rooflines so that the building appears to be one-and-a-half stories. By doing so, they showed respect for the existing neighborhood’s scale. “In the back, it’s more of a two-story form,” says architect Jean Rehkamp Larson.

The judges particularly noticed the home’s millwork, which takes its cue from historic houses but also evinces more modern-day sensibilities. “We were taking older parts and pieces and doing them in a fairly simple way,” Larson says. “They’re not overly wrought.” In a similar transition from old to new, the floor plan’s traditional rooms are defined by beams and trim, rather than solid walls.

“The house holds together,” said a judge. “It’s fun without being silly. And what a great floor plan.”
